Broken hymns. Desperate prayers. Tales of first heroes. Stories of the street. The poems in Steve Meagher's first book, Navy Blue, walk the middle ground between sorrow and salvation, tackling themes of devotion, regret, innocence lost and mortality through an array of dark landscapes and narratives of the dispossessed. Written in sharp and urgent language with undercurrents of raw emotion, this book marks the arrival of a brave and original new voice in Canadian poetry.

Navy Blue First Poets Series Steve Meagher Books Reviews
Steven Meagher, an Ontario native, has penned poetry in this collection that is audacious, attitudinal, piercing, penetrating in language that's crisp, pressing, as he waxes on remorse, redemption, addiction, death, family, purity departed and poignance. A few of my favorites include
"None of Our Fathers"
Our fathers were quiet men
Brave men who didn't ask questions Hard workers who put
their heads down And did whatever needed to get done
They broke themselves
To put food on our tables
And refused all forms of charity Even if it meant they barely
got by
And sometimes at night
While our families were sleeping Our fathers would stare out
the window Swallow hard into the darkness
And bury their suffering deep inside
None of our fathers could've known Just how good we'd
one day have it And how miserable we'd be with it all
"Romantic as I Get"
In the middle of the night You reach across
And pull my arm around you
Muttering something
About being too cold to sleep
Because it's October
Or because it's Canada
Or because we live in a basement
Two days from now
The doctors will tell us Whether I'm living or dying
And whatever is said We'll take it from there
We've come this far And seen so much
There's really nothing Left for me to say
Except
I hope I'm always close enough To keep you from feeling cold
Or alone
"Or Was It Vancouver?"
I was bringing you flowers
Had to be somewhere in Montreal Or was it Vancouver?
Might have been winter
I'm almost certain there was snow I was either running or
walking
I couldn't remember what street Which building
How many floors up
The only thing I knew for sure
You've already be gone when I got there
He also has a sense of humour
"Poem on an Empty Stomach"
When I get around to growing up I want to be someone who
eats breakfast
I want a corner office on Bay Street And a car that
comes from Europe And a summer home in the Muskokas
Or at the very least
A woman with tits the size of San Diego
